Description

This is a highly rare piece of pottery from the late 19th Century by UK artist and architect Alexander Lauder (1836-1921). Lauder was the head of the Barnstaple School of Art in Barnstaple, Devon, England. He, along with his brother-in-law, established their first studio, Lauder & Smith in 1876. He continued progressing his pottery career until he rebranded as the Royal Devon Art Pottery in 1890. Lauder also notably was the mayor of Barnstaple between 1885-1887. The piece is signed "Lauder Barum". Lauder, for his last name, and Barum, another name for the Barnstaple area in Devon, England. It is undated, but likely in that late 19th century time period. The vase is a stunning deep green with a beautiful fish motif created using Lauder's Slip and Sgraffito technique he is most known for. It features lighter green and brown slips to create depth and dimension. The vase came from an estate in North Carolina. Condition: It is a beautiful piece, but it does have three chips on the rim. Otherwise, there are no other issues observed except expected age. Please review all photos and the video as part of the condition report. Measurements: 4" high, 3.5" wide and 3" deep. Weighs 5.6 oz.
