Description

Maid of Honor No 8 Cast Iron Chicken Fryer with 4 Notch Heat Ring & Helper Tab 10-1/2" Diameter, 16-1/4" long with handle, 3-1/16" High This is a vintage cast iron skillet with an inset 4 notch heat ring, helper tab, and no cracks, breaks, or repairs. The bottom of the skillet is marked "Maid of Honor" in a highly stylized script. There are no size marks on this skillet, but the dimensions are those of a typical No. 8 chicken fryer. This Maid of Honor series was made for Sears in the 1950's. Chicken fryers are generally deeper by almost an inch than normal skillets so that more oil can be added for better frying of thicker meat like chicken. It has been restored by me--thoroughly returned to raw cast iron, seasoned properly at high temperature, and is ready to display or use. This is a time-consuming process. No harsh methods were used on this skillet. While there may be some unevenness in how the seasoning took, it has a decent cooking surface with some utensil marks and shallow pitting marks at 1 and 4 o'clock (see last two photos) that will fill with time and additional seasoning--see high resolution pictures and use the magnify feature. This skillet has more than 8 newspaper thicknesses of rock from the center when tested on a flat granite surface. It should not be used on a smooth top stove and is best suited to a gas, electric or other stove with raised heating elements. I tested it on my gas stove and it was fine. Cast iron can be damaged if dropped or mishandled. I pack all cast iron items extremely well, using bubble wrap and additional packing materials.
