Description

This jewel-like Meiji Era bud vase is in the rare Tomei-jippo - translucent enamel over an engraved silver base, technique. In this case - the piece is entirely wireless , relying on the skill of the engraver to create the image depicted. It is 3.5 inches tall and in Good antique condition. The vase has an appealing shape - high-shouldered ovoid form, and has a particularly high-gloss finish indicating that is from the Golden Age of cloisonne from the Meiji Era - 1900 - 1910. The spray of chrysanthemum flowers, buds and foliage are all incised into the silver body and overlaid with translucent enamels. Chrysanthemum flowers are symbolic of royalty, longevity and rejuvenation in Japanese culture. The incised design of flowers and foliage continues around the vase giving it a 360 degree appeal. The background enamel is a great example of subtle " bokashi " - shading from a deep emerald green at the neck of the vase to a pale amber at the base of the piece. This colour scheme is often seen in marked Kumeno Teitaro and Ogasawara Shuzo pieces. The repeated minute stipple or " Nanako " - fish roe pattern and incised floral design in the silver base beneath the enamel does a great job of fulfilling it purpose - to catch and reflect the light for this little jewel of a vase. Both the brass upper rim and base plate have a wonderful antique patina and show remnants of having been silver gilt. The unmarked base looks to have been "worked on" at some point (re-glued?) - it has rippled dents across the surface but sits flat and doesn't wobble (see image 11). DIMENSIONS: Height : 5 inches / 13cm Widest point : 2.5 inches / 6cm CONDITION: Good antique condition. There is a small repair at the bottom of the main flower (see image 12) . The base looks to have been "worked on" at some point re-glued?- it has rippled dents across the surface but sits flat and doesn't wobble (see image 11). Vase displays beautifully.
